Spotlight on Florida’s Future

Florida is at a crossroads and the choices we make TODAY will shape our state for generations. A report from the University of Florida Center for Landscape Conservation Planning and 1000 Friends of Florida shows what Florida’s future could look like by 2070:

  • Sea level rise could inundate 1.7 million acres and force nearly 1 million Floridians to relocate.
  • Continued sprawl could consume 3.5 million acres of land, including 2.2 million acres of farmland, as our population grows by 12 million residents.
  • But smarter, more compact development could save 1.3 million acres from being lost.

The good news? Florida can grow smarter. Science-based planning that protects natural and agricultural lands isn’t just better for the environment — it’s better for taxpayers too.

Take a few minutes to read Spotlight on Florida’s Future and consider how you can support smarter development and conservation in your community, whether that’s championing compact, walkable neighborhoods over sprawl, protecting farmland and natural areas from development, or pushing for science-based planning at the local and state level.
