Recent Issues: Sustainability and Climate Change in Florida --1000 Friends is working to develop Florida-specific land use and transportation strategies to address climate change and sustainability, facilitate creative synergy between state and local actions, and better educate the public on the need for such action. Working to Sustain Florida's Rural and Natural Lands: A Call to Action -- 1000 Friends Chairman Emeritus Nathaniel Reed spoke with some of the state's leading conservationists, agricultural leaders, developers, planners and others and then crafted a series of recommendations to help stem the dramatic loss of Florida's rural lands to urban development. October 2007. Conservation Visioning: Creating An Action Plan for Parks and Land Conservation -- This brochure from the Trust for Public Land addresses the steps involved in successful land conservation efforts and shares success stories from around the nation. 1000 Friends Comments on Charlotte County's TDU Program -- This March 2007 letter and fact sheet outline issues related to the county's Transfer of Density Units program. Florida 2060 -- This series of studies examines how Florida will grow and develop over the next 50 years if we do not work to change its patterns of development, and provides recommendations on how to follow the principles of smart growth for a better outcome. Additionally, the University of Central Florida recently released an Alternative 2060 report. Becoming a "Citizen Planner": Community Stewardship I: A Citizen's Guide to Participating in Florida's Growth Management Process -- This reader-friendly handbook opens with an overview of Florida's growth management process, and then focuses on how citizens can become effective advocates for better planning in their communities. 2004.
