Generating grave concern among smart growth advocates, on December 29, 2006, the Florida Department of Transportation adopted Florida’s Future Corridors Action Plan. While the proposal was shelved during Gov. Crist’s administration, it has been resurrected by Gov. Scott with substantial changes and is moving forward once again. 1000 Friends believes that with the guidance of the conservation and evaluation principles found below, the Future Corridors initiative can become a positive strategy for protecting sensitive environmental areas while providing important transportation mobility options.
1000 Friends is partnering with other state wide, regional and local organizations to monitor and provide meaningful input on this proposal. 1000 Friends is advocating that Florida’s limited state highway transportation dollars should be allocated to expanding the capacity of existing major interstates and expressways (including multi-modal options) and the replacement of aging infrastructure (such as outdated bridge structures) rather than developing new corridors in rural areas of the state. 1000 Friends’ Charles Pattison has been appointed to serve on the East Central Florida Corridor Task Force which is implementing the first phase of the process.
