The
Nature Conservancy began working in the Apalachicola River basin in
1982 when it created the Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve.
Conservancy volunteers have planted more than 1 million longleaf pines
at the preserve. The Conservancy has helped the state of Florida acquire
nearly 125,000 acres of the bays watershed for conservation
management. An agreement is being negotiated between Florida, Alabama
and Georgia on managing the rivers water flow. The Conservancy
has been asked to help identify critical influences on the health
of the basins natural systems and is developing an action plan
to address how to conserve terrestrial, aquatic and estuarine resources
for the benefit of human and natural communities.
