Loxahatchee
Greenways Project
Next Steps
Thanks to the efforts of communities,
individuals, businesses, and public agencies, the Loxahatchee remains
one of the most natural, unaltered river systems in Florida. Since
the Loxahatchee Greenways Project began in 1992, thousands of the
watershed's wetland acres have been purchased for conservation,
protecting and reconnecting water resources that only 60 years ago
flowed uninhibited into the river.
Citizens, local governments and
businesses are capitalizing on cultural, historical and natural
resources of the region by implementing a system of greenways
that connect parks, preserves, rivers, beaches, historic sites
and neighborhoods. The Loxahatchee watershed provides not only
the green infrastructure for sustainable future development but
also countless opportunities for recreation and environmental
education for both residents and tourists. Its water is critical
both to the physical and economic health of our communities as
well as communities of endangered species such as bald eagles,
manatees, red-cockaded woodpeckers and snail kites.
It will take the continued efforts
of residents of the region to fulfill this vision for our future.
If you are already involved in a greenway project in your neighborhood,
thank you. If you would like to be, please contact The Conservation
Fund, your local government or any of the organizations listed
in this report.

The Loxahatchee Region faces a number of critical growth issues
during the coming years. It will take the efforts of many individuals
to meet the area's pressing needs.
