Better Community Awards

1000 Friends of Florida hosts the Better Community Awards program to showcase Florida's leading citizens, public servants, programs and communities that are contributing to an enhanced quality of life in this state.

The recipients of the 2010 awards program will be announced in early April. The deadline for 2011 awards is January 31, 2011. Please check back in early fall for the nomination form.

DCA Secretary Tom Pelham Receives Bill Sadowski Award

2009 Recipients -- In 2009, 1000 Friends presented three Community Steward Awards, to the Lee County Board of County Commissioners for its work to protect the Density Reduction/Groundwater Protection Area, the Smart Growth Coalition of North Central Florida for smart growth advocacy and springs protection in the Marion County area, and Chad Taylor for his community leadership regarding springs protection and visioning in Jackson County. 1000 Friends presented its Better Community Award to Kimco Properties for its SoDo redevelopment project in downtown Orlando.

2008 Recipients -- Over the course of 2008, 1000 Friends of Florida presented Better Community Awards to Golfair Estates in Jacksonville, Volusia Forever in Volusia County, the Genius Reserve Ecological Restoration Project at Rollins College, The Villagers in Coral Gables, Casa San Juan Bosco Farm Worker Community in DeSoto County, and the Coalition for Responsible Growth in Alachua County.

2007 Recipients -- 1000 Friends of Florida presenting awards to John Wheeler of Lake City, Eleanor Godwin of Pensacola, Guy Marwick of Marion County, Dennis Henize of the Florida Keys, Bill Belleville of Sanford, the Tallahassee Democrat and the City of Lake Helen.

2006 Recipients -- 1000 Friends presented awards to Jono Miller of Sarasota County, Bob and Sharon Blanchard and Jennifer L. Seney of Pasco County, Beaches Watch in Duval County, and the Public Officials Design Institute at Abacoa in Palm Beach County.

2005 Recipients -- Find out more about why the Apalachicola Riverkeepers, Collier Rural Lands Stewardship Plan, Miami River Commission and West Palm Beach's Northwood Renaissance were the 2005 award winners!
