2017 Florida Legislative Wrap Up

Join 1000 Friends of Florida for our free 2017 Florida Legislative Wrap Up Webinar on Wednesday, May 24 from noon until 1:30.  At the webinar, 1000 Friends of Florida’s Lester Abberger, Ryan Smart and Thomas Hawkins will discuss what passed and failed during the 2017 session and associated impacts on planning and conservation in Florida.

This session 1000 Friends successfully led efforts to defeat damaging planning legislation, including SB 996 which would have stymied public participation by forcing citizens to pay up to $50,000 in attorneys’ fees and costs for unsuccessful legal challenges.   While we were pleased the legislature approved funding to construct a reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee to reduce discharges to the coastal estuaries, we were outraged that they failed to fund Florida Forever for essential land conservation projects across the state.  We are rolling up our sleeves to lead a statewide effort to fund Florida Forever in 2018, as supported by 75% of Florida’s voters in 2014.  Citizens will play a vital role and at the webinar we will share strategies on how you can help.

Please sign up now for this important webinar.  It has been approved for professional certification credits for planners (AICP CM LEGAL CREDITS #9123402), Florida attorneys (CLE #1703326N), and Certified Floodplain Managers (CEC).
